Growth Mindset

At ECA, our vision is that school families Love God, Value Learning, and Serve Others.

May 14, 2023

In April, I introduced six values that ECA believes is an integral part of our school life. Today, we look at growth mindset.

Growth Mindset - We recognize life is filled with challenges and these can become opportunities for growth. We understand that creativity and innovation can help us become lifelong learners that help us develop skills to tackle an ever-changing world.

We’ve all heard the saying, “When the going gets tough the tough get going!” or “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” What do these have in common? In life, we all come across paths in our life where that proverbial fork in the road gives us a choice to make. The idea of a growth mindset is that when we deliberately focus our energy on challenges with the right attitude, we grow. Choosing the right path in small ways can lead to helping us grow. “The glass is half-full” comes to mind. Recently, I was reminded about two shoe salesmen who were tasked to go to Africa to sell shoes for a company. Once arriving, they responded back to their supervisor. One replied back, “This is horrible, no one here wears shoes. This will be impossible!” The other one replied back, “This is fantastic, what an incredible opportunity in this new market.” Can you guess which person had the growth mindset?

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything..: - James 1:2-4.

VISION & MISSION STATEMENTS

AG Program and Monthly Classroom Participation

Our classroom agriculture program will continue this week, Monday, May 15. The next class to participate will be the students in grades 3&4. They will be in class with Mr. Wyatt from 1:15-3:15. Make sure they have the necessary attire to spend two hours outside in an area filled with dirt and possible warm weather. Make sure your child has a water bottle for the warm weather. Next Monday, May 22 will be students in Grades K-2. NOTE: The last day for ECA’s AG program will be Tuesday, May 30 for this school year. We are excited to announce that Mr. Wyatt will be working all summer with the AG program. If your child would like to work in the program this summer, more information will be going home about how to sign up and what to plan for.

Students will be outside and working in a garden space. Plan now as you look at the schedule of dates. Boot and gloves should be worn. If boots are not available, students can bring an extra pair of old shoes, but please send a bag so they can be put in the bag and sent home until the next class rotation. Students who already have boots and gloves from the after-school program are all set.

ECA & the Oregon Conference Pathfinder Fair

The SDA Church has a program called Pathfinders. For those new to our school and church, this program is similar to Boy and Girl Scouts. Pathfinder groups from all around the state of Oregon will be coming to Eugene this weekend, May 21, for a Pathfinder Fair. School families are welcome to visit. If you would like more information, click on the link below for more information about the program. We will be hosting about 160 Pathfinders at our school this weekend.

ECA Spring Kindergarten Roundup

ECA will be having a Spring kindergarten roundup day on Wednesday, May 17. If you have any family friends that are interested in Christian education for students entering grade school, you can have them call the office for more information about signing up for the afternoon. The visitation will be in the afternoon from 1:00-3:30.

May ECA Constituency Meeting

Our school operates under a school board that is made up of members from six constituent churches. ECA conducts monthly school board meetings. Once a year, we have an annual Constituency Meeting where area church members can come and vote on recommendations for the upcoming school year. This year’s meeting will be held on Thursday, May 18. It will be in the evening in the ECA gym. In addition to our church families, this meeting is also welcome to our school families.

ECA Track & Field Day

ECA has an annual Track & Field Day every year in the late spring. This year, we will be having this event on Tuesday, May 23. Students will go through different activities at school with their classes in the afternoon from 2:00 - 5:00. Parents are invited to come at any time during this afternoon event to watch their children in the different events: 50 m, 100 m, 400 meter relay, running long jump, discuss throw, high jump, obstacle course, softball throw, and mini-javelin throw.

Spring Music Concert

ECA will have their annual spring music concert on Thursday, May 25. Mrs. Vojtko has been working hard to prepare the students for a fun, musical evening. Final details about dress code will be sent out early this week. We will be practicing for the program on the day before - Wednesday, May 24, and the day of the program, May 25. The program will start at 7:00. Students should plan on arriving by 6:45.

May 29 - Memorial Day - No School

There will be no school on Monday, May 29 in honor of Memorial Day.

AR End-of-the-Year Party

Students and reading have been an important part of ECA for a long time. Our reading program is supported by Accelerated Reading. Students are challenged with getting reading minutes or points for the year. Those that reach their goal with a high level of achievement will be leaving school on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 30. Teachers are finalizing all the details. Students who did not reach the yearly goal will be staying at school in the afternoon. In addition, students who reach goals will have another opportunity to be rewarded on our last 1/2 day Friday chapel and last day of school on June 9.

Kindergarten Recognition Day

Kindergarten students will be finishing up the year a little earlier than the rest of the school. Kindergarten students will have a ceremony in the gym on Thursday, June 1 from 8:30-9:00. We are proud of their hard work and look forward to celebrating their accomplishments with them. Kindergarten parents are invited to stay afterwards for a reception in the kindergarten classroom with Ms. Waterson.

Christian Counseling Available - Free Resources:

The NAD (North American Division of SDA) has recently shared new resources for children and teens that offer a safe and anonymous place to talk or text. Here is a news release from the NAD.

We’re excited to announce the launch of www.aruggedjourney.org our newest NAD site providing free online mentoring for guys. A Rugged Journey joins www.gorgeous2god.org (for young women) which has grown in its scope and ministry since its beginning in 2017.

These sites, along with their counterparts on social media, provide free help to our teens/young adults in a space they can ask questions without judgment or fear. The questions are answered by a team of dedicated Seventh-day Adventists at AIM on the campus of Andrews University.

In addition to the confidential Q & A, positive content is provided through videos, posts, etc.
