RoadRunner Review: I'm Just Really Sad At You

Principal’s Message:

Most days I have to stick around at school for quite a while after the school day is done. But, last week I got to leave pretty soon after school was done. I was SO excited, but my daughter was vehemently opposed to this idea. She had found a little “fuzzy wuzzy” and she could not bear the thought of leaving it behind. We’ve seen caterpillars pretty much every day for the past two weeks, so I kinda just brushed it off and figured she would get over it fairly quickly.

We stopped by the giant pumpkin on the way out to the highway and she dragged herself out of the car and stood in front of the pumpkin—no smiles for the camera here, she was fighting really, really hard to hold back tears.

I realized all of a sudden that she was really upset about the caterpillar, so I asked her if she was mad at Mama because I suggested we leave the caterpillar behind. She looked up at me, eyes brimming with tears and said, “Well, it’s a little mad, a little frustrated, but mostly sad—I’m just really sad AT YOU.”

How weird to simultaneously feel like, “whoops, I should have talked with her about the caterpillar instead of plowing past this thing that was important to her…” and “Wow, I’m really proud of my kid for being able to say exactly how she is feeling.” Parenting is a funny journey, cheers to all of you as you wander down this path with a prayer around every turn and your sanity bouncing around at times!
